Antonio Liras, PhD, Universidad
Complutense of Madrid, and International Campus of
Excellence, Spain.
Antonio Liras is President of the
Scientific Commission at the Royal
Foundation "Victoria Eugenia" of Haemophilia and Professor of
Physiology at the Biology School, Universidad Complutense of Madrid, where he
had obtained the Degrees in Pharmacy, in 1979, and in Chemical Sciences in
1986, and the PhD in Pharmacy, in 1988. During that same year he obtained the
Certificate of Specialist Pharmacist in Clinical Analysis by the
Undersecretary's Office of Education and Science and later, in 2003, the
European Certificate of Clinical Chemistry by the European
Communities Confederation of Clinical Chemistry (Brussels-EC4). His
educational and scientific activity has been developed for more than 25 years
at different european universities such as the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid and the Universidad of Milan, and in
prestigious research centers as the Molecular
Biology Center "Severo Ochoa" of Madrid and the Neurological Institute
"Carlo Besta" in Milan and, from November 2002 until present, in
the Physiology Department, Biology School, at the Universidad Complutense of
Madrid. All this work was officially recognised, in August 2003, by the
National Agency for Quality Evaluation and Accreditation and his Scientific
Research Quality was officially evaluated and recognised, in 2006, by the
National Agency of Evaluation of the Research Activity. His scientific work in
the fields of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Gene Therapy has been focused
on the molecular and genetic aspects of physiological and physiopathological
processes. This research activity resulted in the organization of post degree
and specialized courses in these areas. He also participated in research
projects supported by national and international entities like the "Molecular Dystrophy Association
Research Department" of New York or the "Commission of the European
Communities" for the Human Genome Project. All this work has led to the
involvement in 12 research projects; the supervision and evaluation of several
Doctoral Theses; the author or co-author of over 40 peer-reviewer
publications; over 100 publications including reviews, invited editorial
and educational articles; and over 20 educational and scientific books, and
attendance and participation in over 40 scientific congresses. He has been
member of several national and international scientific committees like the
Commission of Experts named by the Undersecretary's Office of Health (Spanish
Ministry of Health) for the evaluation of grants for people with haemophilia
and other congenital blood coagulation disorders, infected with hepatitis C
virus. As Vicepresident of the Scientific Commission of the Royal Foundation
"Victoria Eugenia" of Haemophilia, he is responsible for promotion
and evaluation of the research grants for projects in haemophilia financially
supported by this Royal Foundation. Dr. Antonio Liras is the director of
several courses of the Continued Training Program on Hemophilia for
haemophiliac patients and their relatives, organized by Spanish Federation of
Haemophilia through the Spanish
Federation of Hemophilia Journal. He is also director of the International Course in Hemophilia and other
bleeding inherited disorders, the Spanish equivalent to the International
Course in Hemophilia in Malmö, Sweden, and of the Musculoeskeletic Course in Hemophilia and other bleeding inherited
disorders. Dr. Antonio Liras is on the editorial board of several
scientific journals and is national coordinator of a project on ex vivo non-viral gene therapy and cell
therapy for hemophilia using mesenchymal stem cells from adult adipose tissue,
in collaboration with the Cell
Therapy Laboratory at La Paz Hospital of Madrid. This project has received
several awards for best research initiative in hemophilia from the Spanish Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, the Royal
Foundation "Victoria Eugenia" of Haemophilia.
